MITHIMATICA-
The Department of Mathematics organized and conducted their annual 2-day Fest “Mithimatica” on the 30th and 31st of January 2019. The four main events of the fest were the Seminar Competition and Poster Competition on Day One, followed by Mathematical Games and the Quiz Competition on Day Two.
The Chief Guests for the inauguration ceremony were our alumini Ms. Sonali Parekh and Mr. Nikhil Singh. Ms Sonali Parekh won two gold medals for the highest CPI in MSc. Mathematics at IIT Gandhinagar and is currently working on the Content team at Scholr. Mr. Nikhil Singh completed his M.S. in Software Engineering from BITS PILANI and is currently and is currently the Senior Project Engineer at Wipro. Both the Chief Guests addressed the gathering and spoke about the importance of Mathematics in all fields and the various Career opportunities available to students of Mathematics.
The Principal Dr. Rajpal Shripat Hande addressed the gathering and spoke about the importance of such fests that encourage and motivate college students while pursuing their studies. Students of 2017-18 were felicitated by the Principal for their performance in the T.Y.B.Sc. Examinations. The students also interacted with the audience and spoke about their experience in Mithibai and how it has helped them after graduation.
The fest began with the Seminar Competition with students presenting on a variety of topics and applications of Mathematics like Coding and cryptography, Special Relativity, Google search algorithm, Duckworth-Lewis system, Gaming etc. Posters were well made and informative. The IPL Auction game that was newly introduced this year was very much enjoyed by the students. Over 200 students from all streams participated in the Games. The fest ended with the Quiz competition conducted during the second session on Day 2. There was an interactive feedback session conducted at the end wherein students expressed how the festival helps broaden their views regarding the importance, scope and applications of Mathematics and that they look forward to taking part in such fests again in the coming year.
MITHIMATICA  2018
The Department of Mathematics organized and conducted their annual 2-day Fest “Mithimatica” on the 2nd and 3rd of February 2018. The four main events of the fest were the Seminar Competition and Quiz Competition on Day One, followed by Mathematical Games and Poster Competition on Day Two.The Chief Guest for the inauguration ceremony was Dr. Vivek Rane, Retired Director and Head of the Department of Mathematics, Institute of Science, Mumbai. Dr. Rane gave an inspiring lecture on the History and Open Problems in his field of work, Analytic Number Theory. Principal Dr. Rajpal Shripat Hande addressed the gathering and spoke about the importance of such fests that encourage and motivate college students while pursuing their studies.Students of 2016-17 were especially felicitated for their performance in the T.Y.B.Sc. Examinations. The fest began with the Seminar Competition with 20 students presenting on a variety of topics and applications of Mathematics like Neural Networks, Snapchat, Mathematics in Construction, Biology and Health Science, Archeology etc. There were 34 participants for the Quiz Competition and about 200 students participated in the Games. For the Quiz and Games there were participants from all streams including self financed courses. Not only B.Sc, but also students from B.A. and B.Com streams participated in the Poster Competition which had a total of 14 entries. The valedictory function and prize distribution was conducted at the end of Day Two. It was attended by many students who were enthusiastic and looking forward to participating in Mithimatica and other such events in the next academic year.
VIDEO LECTURE SCREENING
The Department of Mathematics, Mithibai College hosted a screening of the video series “Essence of Linear Algebra” created by Grant Sanderson. This screening specifically benefited Second Year and Third Year students with Mathematics (and/or Statistics/Physics) as their subject(s). It was held on 15th September 2017. The topics covered included Introduction to Vectors, Linear Combinations and Spans, Linear Transformations, Matrix Multiplication, 3D Transformations, Determinants, Inverses and some important Subspaces, Non-Square Matrices. Many students attended the same and also engaged in group discussions following the screening.
