Department of Chemistry, one of the largest departments of college is committed to nurturing overall development of learners through various curricular and extra-curricular activities. Well qualified and enthusiastic teaching faculty members along with efficient and co – operative non-teaching staff are striving to assist learners to achieve their goals.
National Symposium
Department of Chemistry organized an online National Symposium on ‘Scope and Prospects of Chemical Science’ from July 26 – 31, 2021 under the aegis of RUSA. Objective of the symposium was to help aspiring students to acquire a challenging chemistry career in life. Around 161 participants from various colleges of different states participated in his symposium.
On first day of symposium, Dr. Anil Vitthalrao Ghule, Director of IPR, Shivaji University, Kolhapur briefed participants about strategies and important aspects to be considered while choosing a right career. On day 2, Prof. (Dr.) Raghavan B. Sunoj, IIT Bombay illustrated role of computational chemistry in organic reaction mechanism to the participants. On day 3, guest speaker Dr. Savita Ladage, Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education, TIFR briefed participants about Chemistry Educational Research. On day 4 of symposium, guest speaker Dr. Prakash Kondekar, Indian Institute of Naturopathy enthusiastically explained role of Chemistry in Toxicology to the participants. On day 5 of symposium, guest speaker Dr. Vivek Polshettiwar, TIFR, in a very lucid language explained climate change and how to combat it to the participants. On the last and 6th day of symposium, Ms. Ankita Mathew, Senior brand protection specialist, Navee France briefed participants about fundamentals of Intellectual Property Rights and career opportunities there within. Sessions of Dr. Kondekar and Ms. Ankita were organized in collaboration with Indian Women Scientists’ Association.
Chem Trek 21
Students, teachers and staff of Mithibai College celebrated ‘Chem Trek 21’, an annual departmental fest of Chemistry department, on April 09, 2021. ‘Hormones and their effects on body’ was the theme of fest this year.
Through different events like quiz, Adrenaline, JAM (Just-A-Minute), Covalent Jugalbandi and final call, an attempt was made to spread Hormonal Chemistry awareness among the participants. Almost more than 160 students from different Bombay colleges, participated in this event. It was a perfect combination of academics, culture and tradition. Team work of students and teachers of Chemistry department was well appreciated by the roaring audience through applause.
Guest Lecture
Department of Chemistry organized a guest lecture on the topic ‘Opportunities in Chemistry’ on February 4, 2021 under DBT star college scheme. Dr. Avdhoot Velenkar, Head Discovery, S. H. Kelkar and Company Limited, Mumbai guided students on this occasion.
He gave overview of Chemical industry as well as process of drug development to the audience. He shared important tips with students for preparation of CV. He also guided students on how to deal with the layoffs by sharing his own experiences.
Guest Lecture
Department of Chemistry organized an online guest lecture on ‘Opportunities for students with Chemistry background’ on August 28, 2020. Dr. Vadiraj Ekkundi, Director Innova SMART LLP Bengaluru guided third year undergraduate students on this occasion. Around 100 third year undergraduate students participated in this session.
He emphasized the fact that for better chances of employability in competitive outside world, students need to develop their professional skills along with the formal education that they are receiving through their curriculum.
